NZDA Adjudicators

In 2019 we continue to bring leading industry professionals to the New Zealand Dance Awards. Each adjudicator is a leader in their field and it will be great for dancers to experience this further through their workshops. The New Zealand Dance Awards prides itself on the level of adjudicators that we source both Nationally and Internationally to further enhance the opportunities for our dancers all over New Zealand.

Tim Barnes

Timothy trained full time in classical ballet at the Australian International School of coaching and then graduated from Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in 2009.

He was a contestant on "So You Think You Can Dance" Australia 2010 and travelled the world performing shows for Princess Cruises throughout 2011. He has worked commercially with artists such as Squared Division, Kimbra, Delta Goodrem, Joel Creasey, Red foo, Zoe Badwi and Kylie Minogue.

Tim is Co-Director of Melbourne based contemporary dance company “Scimm Dance Company” and “Platforms Youth Company” which have produced several professional contemporary dance productions. He has taught at many schools throughout Australia and has extensive experience as a performer, teacher and choreographer.

Ange McKellar (Westerby)

Dance Teacher /Choreographer. Jazz, Broadway, Tap

Ange discovered her passion for dance growing up in New Zealand, where she was fortunate to have some inspirational teachers who helped guide her passion in the right direction. She has trained in and completed exams in Ballet (RAD) Tap (BBO and NZAMD) and Jazz (NZAMD and AJDA). She gained a lot of experience dancing in competitions, performing in troupes and musical theatre shows. At the age of 19 Ange followed her passion, moved over to Melbourne and completed a full-time year of Performing Arts at Bartuccios Dance and Performing Arts Centre.

Since graduating Ange has gone on to perform on numerous television shows such as In Melbourne Tonight, the Footy Show, Hey Hey it’s Saturday, Sale of the Century, Battle of the Sexes, Neighbours and as a featured role on The Strip (NZ). She has also performed in corporate floorshows, Grand Prix events, and Warner Bros shows, fashion shows, music videos, touring dance shows, The Lord of the Rings premieres (NZ) and The International Rugby Sevens opening and closing ceremonies (NZ). In 2000 Ange was one of the first recipients of an LA Danceforce scholarship to The Edge in Los Angeles and spent 3 months there in 2001 gaining valuable knowledge from inspiring teachers and industry choreographers. Upon returning to New Zealand Ange took on roles in Musical Theatre shows such as Anything Goes, Razzle Dazzle, Jesus Christ Superstar, Ovation, Another Right Royal Gala and in 2004 played the role of Jan in Grease, which was a definite highlight.

Ange has choreographed numerous corporate events in both New Zealand and Australia, choreographing for International rugby tests, the International Rugby Sevens, Stage Shows, Catwalk Theatre for the L’Oreal Fashion week, performances for the Kids foundation charity ball, Wakkakerri, My Room Charity ball and The Royal Melbourne Show. She was one of the resident choreographers for the Hurricanes Super 14 rugby
team dancers in Wellington for 3 years.

Ange moved back to Australia in 2008 and in 2009 took on the role of Dance School Manager at Jason Colemans Ministry of Dance. Ange has been in very high demand as a teacher, choreographer and adjudicator
throughout Australia and New Zealand and loves being able to teach at workshops and seminars.

Ange has now moved back home to Wellington, New Zealand and is working with the full time Commercial Dance students at Te Auaha, (Whitireia Performance Centre). She is really excited to be teaching and working with the new generation of dancers and performers and to pass on her knowledge and passion for dance and the industry.

Turanga Merito

Turanga graduated from University of Auckland School of Creative & Performing Arts in 2001 and from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy New York in 2007.

Turanga works professionally in live theatre, television and music, as a vocalist, vocal coach, actor, dancer and choreographer. He has appeared in a number of musicals in Australia including Chess, West Side Story, High School Musical Live and in the part of Simba in the Lion King. He has been backing vocalist for the likes of Marcia Hines, Guy Sebastion and Stan Walker.

He has worked with X Factor Australia and New Zealand as a vocal coach and choreographer. Since 2011 he has been head choreographer for Coca Cola Christmas in the Park. Turanga is currently based in Rotorua, where he is Artistic Director of Lakes Performing Arts Company.

Morgan Rose

Morgan Rose is incredibly excited to be in New Zealand for the first time! She most recently finished up two years with School of Rock on Broadway, serving as a Swing and then Dance Captain in her final months with the company. She is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association and a graduate of Florida State University’s BFA Music Theatre program.

In addition to making her Broadway debut in School of Rock, Morgan’s favorite performance credits include: Evita (Revival 1st National Tour), Shrek the Musical (1st National Tour), Elf the Musical (Madison Square Garden), Dear Edwina (Original Off Broadway Cast), Pirates of Penzance (choreography by Josh Bergasse), A Chorus Line (Maine State Music Theatre), as well as several benefit performances for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and Dancers’ Responding to AIDS.

Morgan’s credits include being a former faculty member of Broadway Dance Center’s Children Teen Program, as well as a guest teacher for BDC Guest Services, and subbing for their Theatre Dance drop in classes. In addition to her NYC teaching experience, Morgan has taught across the United States for Broadway Connection and the Junior Theatre Festival held annually in Atlanta, Georgia.

Morgan’s been incredibly fortunate to work alongside some of New York’s most inspiring choreographers. She has been an Associate to BDC faves Al Blackstone and Natalie Malotke, as well as assisting Ricky Hinds and Josh Bergasse on various projects. Their work continues to inspire her own journey both on and off stage.

Nathaniel Hancock

Nathaniel is a current cast member of Tap Dogs where he has performed on The West End, and in America, Europe, Asia, Bahrain, UAE, Australia and South Africa over the past 7 years. He is a founding member of Street Feet Entertainment and The Australian Tap Company and is an integral part of The Tap Tour. Nathaniel also appeared in the animated film Happy Feet 2 as a featured tap dancer.

He has also performed with Beat the Streets, Street Feet Entertainment and The Next Step alongside some of Australia’s best commercial dancers and tap dancers alike. His most recent performances with the Tap Dogs in Australia were: The Lord Mayor’s New Year’s Eve party at the Sydney Opera House, The NRL Dally M Awards and the Virgin Blue 10th Anniversary Celebration. Nathaniel has been teaching and adjudicating tap dance both nationally and internationally for the past 11 years and shows that he has a great passion for sharing his love and knowledge of tap dance. He has been a member of the faculty at the past two Australian Tap Festival’s and The Sydney Tap Festival in 2017 and has just finished teaching the advanced residency at the Sydney Tap Festival in April this year.

His love of rhythm and unique, intricate time signatures really places him at the forefront of modern tap dance in Australia. These skills along with trick steps, fast feet and musicality driven choreography shows that Nathaniel and his tap dance peers are well and truly keeping tap alive in Australia.

Bek Ansell

Bek has trained in all styles of dance since the age of 12. She has been trained in Glen wood tap and RAD ballet. She is currently completing her Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management.

Bek is a freelance dance teacher/choreographer for many prestigious Sydney Dance Studios/ schools teaching classes, workshops and masterclasses.
She is a current member of the hip hop crew ‘Zealous Dance Crew’ based in Sydney lead by a Former Royal Dance Crew Member.

Her performance credits include: MTV awards, Ja Rule, Montel Jordan, Christine Anu, Deni Hines, Rebecca Verrier, OZ Harvest, Dream Industry Party, 4Elements All Age Hip Hop Festival, Hustle Street Webseries, Peter and the Croc Musical, Angels Amongst us, Artstar, Winter Beats, Our Wedding expo, APIA, Marconi Soccer Club and many more.
She has had many TV appearances throughout her career on SBS, MTV and Channel 9.
At the age of 17, Bek was discovered by the Talent Development Program and went on to become a featured singer in Channel 9s School Spectacular.
It was here she was offered a regular spot on the SBS show ‘The Crew’.

She has gone on to sing and host many corporate gigs, TV specials and Charity events including: Soul and Sound, Battle of the youth - Battle for Charity, ACN Pacific Conference, Fundraiser for Vina, Sublime and has been a guest performer at multiple concerts and weddings.

Most recently, Bek has been adjudicating both Nationally and Internationally.

With over 18 years experience in the dance industry, and 12 years teaching dance. Between her passion for dance and her life goal to help build confidence in children. Bek has a wealth of knowl- edge to share with the next generation.

Carly O'Conner

Carly is a seasoned professional dancer/choreographer/director who has returned home after being based in Los Angeles for four years. She has travelled the world for various television performances, live shows and teaching. Her credits include working alongside the likes of Beyonce, Ke$ha, Kylie Minogue, Dannii Minogue, Kelly Rowland, RuPaul, Tina Arena, Mika, Rogue Traders, Red Foo, Sneaky Sound System, Marcia Hines & musical theatre legends Caroline O’Connor and Kristen Chenoweth. Most recently Carly has been in LA & NYC working as assistant choreographer to Tovaris Wilson on various projects.

Throughout her dance career she has performed on XFactor, Hey Hey its Saturday, Sunrise, Australian Idol, Foxtel Network, The Footy Show, Australia’s Next Top Model, Celebrity Big Brother and ‘Happy Feet’ the movie. In the US she has performed and assisted on America's Got Talent, American Music Awards, MTV US, US sitcoms ‘Better With You’ & Disney’s ‘Jessie’ and Disney film 'Until We Meet Again'.

She has choreographed high profile events and performances for Amway, Toni & Guy, Wella, EVO, Norsca (TVC), Eskimo Joe 'London Bombs' (music video) and Pen2Stage Productions. Carly has also taught and judged dance competitions extensively throughout the US, Australia, Asia and NZ.
